Lead Acid
Lead acid was the first battery technology used in a commercial way. The technology consists of three main types:
- Flooded lead acid
- Sealed lead acid
- Valve regulated lead acid
Flooded lead acid
This type is an open cell and require regular maintenance. The flooded lead acid battery type is best known for its use in cars and UPSes.
Sealed lead acid
The battery is sealed and requires a very low level of maintenance – this cell type is generally also known as gelcell. The sealed batteries are designed with a low over-voltage potential to prevent gas generating during charging. This battery type has a typical capacity range that does not exceed 30 Ah and is therefore suitable for small applications that require a small amount of power.
Valve lead acid
This battery is regulated with valves; otherwise it has the same characteristics as the sealed lead acid type. This kind of battery has a high capacity, 30+ Ah, and is suitable for large applications such as power backup systems (UPS).
